Uganda Minister Orders 100-Day Crackdown on Dangerous Commuter Taxis

Starting Monday, August 24, Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama has directed police to launch a 100-day operation in Greater Kampala targeting 'Ganyegenya' 14-seater taxis in dangerous mechanical condition, like those patched with ropes and superglue. A recent 60-day inspection found none of 30 voluntary taxis roadworthy, with issues from defective brakes to rusted bodies, and the government plans to impound them while sparing well-maintained vehicles. The move aims to boost public safety and reduce fatal crashes, though some worry about service disruptions on routes like Luzira and Gayaza.
